I switch from bottom to top depending on how it looks with whatever theme I'm currently using.

Ever since I went widescreen it went to the left. So as to reclaim as much vertical space as I could.

always top. looks nice, much more easy to open windows and all. I just don't use small icons, look weird.

I've been using it on top with small icons for about a year and I find it very comfortable because it's directly at the level of my eyes and I don't need to rotate my head on some events or notifications :)

That's a good point of view, and I haven't seen it that way before :)

I think it just depends on everyone, those (like me) that prefers focus on what I'm using right now, and to have a clean and free workspace might like the taskbar on bottom. (I even create a mockup of an explorer with the menus on bottom ^^)
But those like you that think the taskbar is the beginning and end of everything prefer to have it on the most viewable place, which is on top.
I think both have very good reasons.

But to me the most annoying thing is about the caption buttons. With the taskbar on bottom and a full-screen window, all I have to do to close a window is to put the pointer on top-right of the screen and I'll be sure to be on the close button. But it's impossible with the taskbar on top, where I'll have to look and point directly on the button and not 2mm away. I don't feel comfortable with that.

Windows may be part of the last OS to use it on bottom. I think it will slide to the side for future OS, as I think screens may continue to be more width (why have 2 screens when you can have only one...), and a giant taskbar on bottom or top may begin to look ridiculous with such large device.

I think it's a matter of habit and I will use the taskbar on bottom if I'll have to :)

Before I placed it on top I've been using it on the right side with auto hiding so the whole screen was mine! :D
Moving the taskbar is a sort of changing the appearance like applying new themes.

Btw your theme is awesome. Even the standart Win 7 theme looks less "aero" than yours.

using win7:
top if the taskbar is minimal, usually an opaque style, and small icons are used.
bottom (or left) if the taskbar has transparency and/or large icons are used.
i prefer the superbar on the left now. it's the logical choice on a widescreen display and it's just plain cool that way.

Windows 7 has distinctive features(jumplist, thumbnails preview and startmenu).
Those, especially startmenu, looks not good on left or right side.

Unlike Mac OS X, Windows has caption bar when it maximized.
so when taskbar is on Top, it makes an ill appearance.

Left left left. Applications steal horizontal space with features like menus and status bars, and that extra little bit saved by a left aligned task bar makes a work of difference.

Not all applications... Photoshop for examples uses all the spaces on sides, and that's also a main reason for me to use the taskbar on bottom.
But I think no one can argue that when browsing (documents or Internet) the taskbar is sure better on side to free spaces in the height :)

Funny but I've just thought of moving it to the left as I used at first on my 16:9, and made almost the same conclusion as you did =D
Bottom .. bottom .. aero bottom and minimized. Leaves a lot of space and keeps your sight in the middle even with panels on both sides while working in Adobe suite ,two windows and for codding progs especially (projManager on the right, propView on the left or vice versa) .
Sometimes turn on autohide=)

It's always been on the bottom for me (even though I use a 16:9 widescreen display) but then I tend to keep it on autohide. I see very little point to always looking at a list of running programs; I know what's there as I put it there- and I tend to just alt-tab between programs anyway.

Bottom currently, 'cause of Soft7, BUT, usually on the top or on the left.

Left, because I use a wide screen.

That's my main purpose ^^ To know if people us it on right or left, to choose which side will be join with the bottom part of Soft7, so that the most used versions are together :)

I also have a wide screen, well it's a 16/10 not 16/9... But I still find the taskbar on sides disturbing... certainly a question of long time habit.
But when I have a window in full screen I want to see only it and not the taskbar, and if the taskbar is on a side I'll see it far more easily that when it's on bottom. It looks like a wall to my vision...
I think it's because of the way we look at our world, we have a "flat" vision, to look on the horizon, and we focus on things that are straight ahead and on sides, because that's where most predators could come... (There's not many angry birds ^^).

And that's about the same for the top taskbar, it appears like a roof, and I prefer a solid floor free from roof :D

Well I've been using the taskbar on bottom for years and years. But one day I noticed that I could make good use of my 16/10 screen and put it to the left side. It sure was disturbing first, but I got used to it and it really feels great when browsing online. Especially since most websites don't make good use of widescreens. Almost every content are displayed in a vertical order, so it makes more sense to me to have more height to see a list or a text.

About top vs bottom, you won't usually see the sky or ceiling in movies, and you don't usually look at the sky but the road when walking. It's somewhat natural that you control your tasks from the bottom. Though, titles of chapters in books are on top of the page, and you read from top to bottom.

Well, we could talk a lot about that, but I still prefer my taskbar to be on the left side.

Well, now-a-days i use it at the bottom.
But it all really depends on what theme you use. If i used a 'Macish' theme i will use the taskbar on top instead in most cases. However, when i use an aero theme i always use the taskbar on the bottom.
